Be Bold: Be Fearless

Be Bold: Be Fearless

June 25, 2020

One of the (many) impressive aspects of being part of The Fearless Community is our international reach. We are fortunate to have such a diverse set of designers from across the world already located in the UK and Ireland. Each bringing with and contributing to, the expanding language and dialogue of our design community.

Taking stock

Yes, I am consciously aware that there is a broader narrative in conversation around the world right now. Its focus and aims are deep as they are wide. But the one thing that is both apparent and obvious to me is the need for diversity, inclusion and accessibility.

For too long, they have been words that have lacked substance or accountability.

The discipline of the design has come a long way since I started way back in the pre-internet days (yes, that time did exist!). The reach and contribution of design in the lives of billions around the world are clearly evident. It has brought progress and prosperity, but at the same time, it cannot be denied that it has also brought decline and decay.

The time is now

I feel that it has never been a more critical time for our community. Our craft demands our integrity, discipline, respect, and empathy be at the core of what we do. It necessitates an open and conscious mind for the world we live in, and awareness of how our vocations impact the lives of many. As I stated, there have been times where we have done this well, and we should celebrate, continue and progress furthermore. But we should also take a moment to take stock and listen and learn on how to make sure we don’t consciously or unconsciously repeat the mistakes of our past.

Momentum demands movement

This is not the role of one or a few. It is the role of many. It is a formidable challenge and one not to be underestimated. But if we keep it honest, if we keep moving in the right direction and maintain momentum — fast and slow — it will be one that we can build a foundation for our future.

Peace, Love and Equality!
